March 2016

This march was my best month since November as far as quantity. Perhaps it was the shorter running time of a lot of the titles. Three of them were short films under 10 minutes, and about seven of them were animated DC films, which in average run about 75 minutes. Among the highlights were those DC films, which despite their low budgets and running times are the best superhero things being produced at the moment. I also caught up with a few Oscar contenders and watched the latest Disney Animation Studios film, which, other than Winnie the Pooh, is the best film the studio has produced in the Lasseter era. Overall, I watched 25 new titles.

Top 10

  1. You Can’t Take it With You (Frank Capra, 1938)
  2. Zootopia (Rich Moore & Byron Howard, 2016)
  3. Wisdom Teeth/Rejected/Billy’s Balloon (Don Hertzfeldt, 2010/2000/1998)
  4. Room (Lenny Abrahamson, 2015)
  5. Steve Jobs (Danny Boyle, 2015)
  6. Amy (Asif Kapadia, 2015)
  7. Batman: Bad Blood (Jay Oliva, 2016)
  8. Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (Jay Oliva, 2013)

  1. Question: are you going to update your D50? You ended at Frozen, but you still have Big Hero 6 and Zootopia. Or is that it?

    • I want to but now a days its rare that i get the desire to write a long-form review that wasn’t part of another project. The last three that I wrote were to express my disappointment (Jurassic World, Pitch Perfect 2) or to express my surprise and delight (Blackhat).

But I will at some point. Big Hero 6 I liked a lot but didn’t inspire me to write about it. Zootopia I need to see again but I did love it.
