February 2013- Best & Worst

 photo CropperCapture2_zpsdd60f523.jpg

I used most of February to catch up on some of my once-anticipated films of 2012, as well as some of the last Oscar contenders that I had yet to see, including the recently-crowned Best Picture, Argo, which aside some fine cinematography, is nothing more than passable entertainment. Despite that, great pleasure was to be found in other Oscar nominees, both present and past, such as a 1939 Best Picture nominee that is also one of the best comedies of all time, a 2012 Best Picture about the true meaning of love, an inventive re-telling of one of cinema’s most often-told stories, and an Oscar-winning documentary that brings nothing new to the format, but packs an emotional punch like few other films.

Other highlights of the month include the most criminally underrated would-be blockbuster of 2012, the promishing feature-writing debut of one of the most charming actresses in television.

The Best

1. Ninotchka (Ernst Lubitsch, 1939)

2. Amour (Michael Haneke, 2012)

3. Anna Karenina (Joe Wright, 2012)

4. Undefeated (Dan Lindsay & T.J. Martin, 2011)

5. Dredd (Pete Travis, 2012)

6. Celeste and Jesse Forever (Lee Toland Krieger, 2012)

7. Farewell, My Queen (Benoit Jaquot, 2012)

8. Seven Psychopaths (Martin McDonagh, 2012)

9. A Late Quartet (Yaron Zilberman, 2012)

10. Trading Places (John Landis, 1983)

Best rewatch: Nacho Libre

Worst: Arbitrage

Best Director: Ernst Lubitsch, Ninotchka

Best Actor: Jean-Louis Trintignant, Amour

Best Actress: Greta Garbo, Ninotchka & Emmanuelle Riva, Amour

Best Supporting Actor: Sam Rockwell, Seven Psychopaths

Best Supporting Actress: Isabelle Huppert, Amour & Alicia Vikander, Anna Karenina

Best Screenplay: Amour

Best Cinematography: Amour

Best Costume Design: Anna Karenina

Best Music: A Late Quartet

And this month, since I didn’t watch a film with Zac Effron running around in his undies for most of the running time, I sign off with a few shots of the gorgeous costumes (and sets) of Anna Karenina
