Breaking Down The Golden Globes Nominations

So, yeah, I didn’t do too well with my predictions, because, like I said, they both a predictable and unpredictable group. Anyways, I’ll comment on every category and tell my thoughts. Mind you, I’ve not seen every movie, but still.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
BLACK SWAN
THE FIGHTER
INCEPTION
THE KING’S SPEECH
THE SOCIAL NETWORK

Just as I predicted. Moving on.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
Halle Berry, FRANKIE AND ALICE
Nicole Kidman, RABBIT HOLE
Jennifer Lawrence, WINTER’S BONE
Natalie Portman, BLACK SWAN
Michelle Williams, BLUE VALENTINE

Halle Berry? Halle Berry over Lesley Manville? Shame.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
Jesse Eisenberg, THE SOCIAL NETWORK
Colin Firth, THE KING’S SPEECH
James Franco, 127 HOURS
Ryan Gosling, BLUE VALENTINE
Mark Wahlberg, THE FIGHTER

I’m surprised Javier Bardem wasn’t nominated. But still, predictable group of nominees.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
ALICE IN WONDERLAND
BURLESQUE
THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
RED
THE TOURIST

Awful, just awful. Only two of them (RED, The Kids Are All Right) are well liked. There were some other good comedies out there, like Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and Easy A, hell even Hot Tub Time Machine deserved a spot over some of these. Come on!

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Annette Bening, THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
Anne Hathaway, LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS
Angelina Jolie, THE TOURIST
Julianne Moore, THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
Emma Stone, EASY A

Yay for Emma Stone and Julianne Moore! Benning has this in the bag already, so, moving right along.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE -MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Johnny Depp, ALICE IN WONDERLAND
Johnny Depp, THE TOURIST
Paul Giamatti, BARNEY’S VERSION
Jake Gyllenhaal, LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS
Kevin Spacey, CASINO JACK

Rather unexepected nominations for Paul Giamatti and Kevin Spacey. Johnny Depp wasn’t bad in Alice in Wonderland, but the role certainly didn’t deserve to be nominated. But then again, he has been a lock ever since the movie was announced. And didn’t critics say that he pretty much ruined The Tourist?

BEST DIRECTOR
Darren Aronofsky, BLACK SWAN
David Fincher, THE SOCIAL NETWORK
Tom Hooper, THE KING’S SPEECH
Christopher Nolan, INCEPTION
David O. Russell, THE FIGHTER

Another predictable bunch, with Russell being somewhat of a surprise.

BEST SCREENPLAY
Danny Boyle, 127 HOURS
Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Hart, THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
Christopher Nolan, INCEPTION
David Seidler, THE KING’S SPEECH
Aaron Sorkin, THE SOCIAL NETWORK

Fine. Nothing to write home about.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
Alexander Desplat, THE KING’S SPEECH
Danny Elfman, ALICE IN WONDERLAND
A.R. Rhaman, 127 HOURS
Trent Reznor, THE SOCIAL NETWORK
Hans Zimmer, INCEPTION

This is the category that angered me the most. First off, Alexandre Desplat had three great and creative scores this year (The Ghost Writer, Harry Potter, and Tamara Drewe), and he gets nominated for his dullest, and possibly worst of his career so far. Second, while I enjoyed Alice’s score, it had no business being here when Clint Mansell had another great score with Black Swan. Same goes for A.R. Rhaman.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
BIUTIFUL
THE CONCERT
THE EDGE
I AM LOVE
IN A BETTER WORLD

Biutiful and I Am Love were expected. The Concert is supposed to be awful, but that’s Harvey Weinstein for you.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MOTION PICTURE
Amy Adams, THE FIGHTER
Helena Bonham Carter, THE KING’S SPEECH
Mila Kunis, BLACK SWAN
Melissa Leo, THE FIGHTER
Jacki Weaver, ANIMAL KINGDOM

Jacki Weaver continues to steamroll through the season. Nice to see Kunis being nominated. Maybe she will get an Oscar nom after all

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MOTION PICTURE
Christian Bale, THE FIGHTER
Michael Douglas, WALL STREET: MONEY NEVER SLEEPS
Andrew Garfield, THE SOCIAL NETWORK
Jeremy Renner, THE TOWN
Geoffrey Rush, THE KING’S SPEECH

Michael Douglas is the only surprising one. The rest, cool.

BEST ANIMATED FILM
DESPICABLE ME
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON
THE ILLUSIONIST
TANGLED
TOY STORY 3

Predictable.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG – MOTION PICTURE
“Bound to You” – BURLESQUE
“Coming Home” – COUNTRY STRONG
“I See the Light” – TANGLED
“There’s a Place for Us” – THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE DAWN TREADER
“You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” – BURLESQUE

With the exception of Narnia, this is a predictable bunch.
