Review: Clash of the Titans (2010)

Clash of the Titans | Louis Leterrier, 2010

I’m tired of the recent wave of remakes as much as the next person who knows a little bit about movies. However, I’m still not opposed to remakes as long as the project is worthwhile. I think the most worthwhile remakes are those that retelling the story of a notorious bad movie. The original Clash of the Titans, while it may have some nostalgic value for some, is a bad movie, whose only redeeming factors are the Harryhousen visual effects. With the remake they had the chance to make a better movie by cleaning up the story and fixing the flaws in the production. In the end, the Louis Leterrier’s remake is worse than the original, and it doesn’t have something like the original’s visual effects to make it last against the test of time.

Clash of the titans tells the story of Perseus (Sam Worthington), the half-human son of Zeus (Liam Neeson). When he was a baby he was saved from death by a fisherman and was brought up in that profession. One day while on their way to paying tribute to Zeus, they come across an army who are destroying his monument. This obviously angers the gods, so Hades (Ralph Fiennes) kills them all, as well as Perseus’ family. So now he wants revenge. So, one thing leads to another and Hades has said that if the people of a Argon don’t sacrifice the beautiful princess Andromeda (Alexa Davalos), then he will release the kraken. So now Perseus has to find a way to kill the Kraken to weaken Hades so hat he can have his revenge.

I’ll just go straight to the point: this movie is crap. It’s not useless as I’m sure there are tons of people out there that will love it, but it’s just so bland. The script is just a series of scenes with no flow in between, with horrible dialogue. And the director stays way too close to it, which makes it as bad as the script. It is the kind of movie that demands great visuals, but the director is just not up to the taks. It looks like just about every movie that is set during those times, and the CGI is rather bad. Before the movie starts there is a trailer for the original, and I can honestly say that the visual effects in that are much better.

And the visual effects are not the only things that are wrong with the production. The costumes look like something you could buy at any Halloween costume store.  The sets looked cheesy. Cinematography is like the one you find in your average Hollywood movie. The score, bland.

Not helping are the performances. Sam Worthington seems like he wants to be the next Keanu Reeves. Liam Neeson is just phoning it in. Ralph Fiennes is using his Voldemort voice. Gemma Arterton is good for what she has to do, which is just follow Sam Worthington around. The only performance that I liked is Polly Walker’s, and she’s in it for like two minutes.

So, yeah, Clash of the Titans is bad. At least it had Gemma Arterton and Alexa Davalos’ hotness.
