Review: 8 1/2

I have heard how great Federico Fellini is so many times that I was ready to dismiss him when I finally saw one of his movies. So, I decided to start with the movie that many people consider to be his masterpiece, 8 1/2. Needless to say, after watching this I see why everyone loves him.

The movie is about Guido Anselmi (Marcello Mastroianni), a director that has lost his inspiration and is expected to make a big movie. At the same time, he has to deal with his relationship with his wife and his mistress, his past, and his infatuation with an actress.
Filled with great performances, symbolism, and beautiful women, 8 1/2 shows how difficult it is to be a talented director and the pressure he faces because of it. This is shown through the many dreams that Guido has during the movie, all foreshadowing his eventual failure with the project. By the end, I was satisfied with Guido’s decision, for that was the only way he could become the director he used to be. 8 1/2 might very well be my favorite movie of all time.
